I want to tell you about the Fire Queen today. And why finding your own piece of “soul art” can help you heal from separation or divorce.
I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina with my husband, walking through the colorful and funky neighborhood of LaBoca. I stopped in my tracks when I saw the Fire Queen hanging in a small gallery. She was a large and colorful abstract batik of a woman’s head and upper body. The shopkeeper told us that she was the Fire Queen, a Mayan symbol of feminine strength and beauty. I fell in love with her immediately. She was wild, big, bold, strong, powerful, and steady. It was impractical to buy her—we would have to carry this huge rolled up batik with us for the rest of our travels. But having her in my home felt important. She represented parts of myself that were just beginning to grow. She embodied who I wanted to be. She would be the reminder of the direction I wanted my life to take.
Everything in our homes is a symbol of who we are and who we are becoming. Whether we are conscious of it or not, every time you walk by anything that’s hanging on your wall, it tells you a story about you and your life. The associations, feelings, and memories connected with each piece of art in your home create a story of who you are.
Especially during separation or divorce, you need your home—and everything in it—to send you messages of support, nurturance, and expansion. Now, more than ever, you need your home to be on your side. Just as my Fire Queen constantly invites me to be all that she is, your piece of soul art can remind you of who you most want to be. It can—and will—carry you to the other side of your separation or divorce.
Going through separation or divorce can leave you feeling groundless. It can shake your identity to the very core, leaving you feeling raw, unstable, and completely exhausted. Home.ology views your home as a place that can help you heal and move through these painful feelings. As you go through your journey of separation or divorce, you will want your home to be a partner with you in healing. Bringing a piece of soul art into your home can do just this.
Here are five ways that a piece of soul art can help you heal from separation or divorce:
- It can help you answer the question “who am I now?”
- It can help remind you of who you want to be.
- It can remind you of what you want your life to look and feel like.
- It can provide inspiration, delight, and relief from the painful feelings that so often come with separation or divorce.
- It can help strengthen qualities in you that are just beginning to grow.
And how do you know when a piece of art is soul art? Keep these things in mind:
- It speaks to you deeply. It stirs your soul. It touches your intuition.
- It may not make sense that you like or want it. But you do!
- It feels important to your healing and growth to have it.
- You feel you have to have it.
- You love, love, love it!
You may not know yet who you want to be. The ground under you may still be shaky. You may still be living in the chaos and uncertainty. Even still, I invite you to be open to finding your piece of soul art. Or better yet, letting it find you. Just like the Fire Queen found me, in a crowded little shop in the middle of South America.
Have you used a piece of soul art to help you through your separation or divorce? How did it help get your life back on track? I would love to hear! And even better, feel free to post a picture of your soul art in the comments section below!
